Understanding how acne develops is key to seeing how AviClear effectively treats it. Acne vulgaris results from multiple factors, including increased sebum production triggered by androgen hormones, especially during puberty.
Excess oil, combined with sticky skin cells (follicular hyperkeratinization), clogs pores, creating an ideal environment for Cutibacterium acnes bacteria to thrive.
This leads to inflammation, and the body’s immune response manifests as different types of acne breakouts. AviClear uses patented infrared diode laser technology with a precise 1726nm wavelength.
This wavelength is uniquely absorbed by sebum, allowing the laser to gently heat and regulate oil gland activity without harming surrounding skin.
Are There Any Side Effects?
AviClear is designed to be a safe and comfortable treatment with minimal downtime. Suitable for all skin types and tones, most patients tolerate the procedure well, and clinical studies have shown that no treatments were stopped due to discomfort. The most common side effects include temporary redness and mild swelling immediately after the session, which typically subside within a few hours.
Some patients may experience an initial “purging” phase, where acne temporarily worsens after the first treatment—similar to the effects of starting isotretinoin or topical retinoids. This can often be managed with oral antibiotics and tends to lessen with subsequent treatments as oil gland activity decreases.
Clinical studies confirm AviClear’s excellent safety profile, with no reported cases of blistering, scarring, or long-term skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation).
How does AviClear differ from other acne lasers?
While other laser treatments offer benefits for acne, AviClear sets itself apart as the only FDA-approved option for all severities of acne vulgaris.
Some of the other laser treatments for acne include:
- IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is effective in the treatment of acne; however, it delivers temporary results and may not be suitable for all skin tones.

What should I expect from the treatment?
AviClear features a unique cooling system called AviCool™ that keeps things comfortable throughout the session. You might feel a gentle snapping sensation during treatment, but clinical studies show patients tolerate it well without the need for pain relief.
AviClear treatments are quick and comfortable, typically lasting around 30 minutes. Most patients find the treatment tolerable without numbing cream.
However, for those who prefer extra comfort, we can always discuss using a topical anesthetic beforehand.
