AviClear as a permanent solution for acne

The AviClear Laser System is specifically designed to target and suppress the sebaceous glands, thermally damaging them to impair their activity; Impaired gland activity results in a reduction in excess sebum production, alleviating current breakouts, while also preventing future breakouts. AviClear is thus suitable for patients seeking a long-term solution for achieving clear skin.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Understanding how acne develops is key to seeing how AviClear effectively treats it. Acne vulgaris results from multiple factors, including increased sebum production triggered by androgen hormones, especially during puberty.

Excess oil, combined with sticky skin cells (follicular hyperkeratinization), clogs pores, creating an ideal environment for Cutibacterium acnes bacteria to thrive.

This leads to inflammation, and the body’s immune response manifests as different types of acne breakouts. AviClear uses patented infrared diode laser technology with a precise 1726nm wavelength.

This wavelength is uniquely absorbed by sebum, allowing the laser to gently heat and regulate oil gland activity without harming surrounding skin.

Are There Any Side Effects?

AviClear is designed to be a safe and comfortable treatment with minimal downtime. Suitable for all skin types and tones, most patients tolerate the procedure well, and clinical studies have shown that no treatments were stopped due to discomfort. The most common side effects include temporary redness and mild swelling immediately after the session, which typically subside within a few hours.

Some patients may experience an initial “purging” phase, where acne temporarily worsens after the first treatment—similar to the effects of starting isotretinoin or topical retinoids. This can often be managed with oral antibiotics and tends to lessen with subsequent treatments as oil gland activity decreases.

Clinical studies confirm AviClear’s excellent safety profile, with no reported cases of blistering, scarring, or long-term skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation).

FDA-Approved AviClear Laser: An Effective Acne Treatment

The AviClear Laser System is the first and only FDA-cleared energy-based device specifically designed to treat mild to severe inflammatory acne.

Using unique laser technology at a wavelength of 1726 nm, AviClear precisely targets and heats the sebaceous glands—the source of excess oil production that leads to breakouts. This reduces sebum output and helps prevent future acne, all without the need for medication or invasive.

AviClear delivers controlled energy through a diode laser with a touchscreen interface and an integrated cooling system to protect the skin, ensuring comfort and safety during treatment. It is classified as a Class II medical device, cleared through the FDA’s rigorous 510(k) process for its safety and effectiveness.

AviClear is suitable for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I-VI) and demonstrates consistent effectiveness across age, gender, and acne severity subgroups. It’s an ideal option for those seeking a long-term, drug-free solution to acne that’s clinically proven and safe.

CLINICAL TRIAL : is 1726nm Laser safe for treating Acne?

A recent study evaluated the novel 1726 nm laser with contact cooling, demonstrating its safety and effectiveness for treating mild to severe acne.

Selective photothermolysis with a novel 1726 nm laser beam: A safe and effective solution for acne vulgaris

As illustrated in the left diagram, seventeen patients underwent up to three facial treatments, resulting in a 52–56% reduction in inflammatory lesions within 12 weeks, and up to 97% reduction at 24 months.

The treatment was well-tolerated without anesthesia, with high patient satisfaction and minimal side effects.

AviClear Laser System (1726nm) for Treating Acne

The AviClear Laser System which utilises 1726nm laser technology underwent a robust clinical evaluation to support its safety and efficacy in treating acne. This study served as a foundational element for the device’s FDA 510(k) clearance, making AviClear the first and only energy-based device approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of mild to severe inflammatory acne.

Study Design and Population

Patients received treatment using the AviClear laser system, which operates at a 1726 nm wavelength to target sebaceous glands, the root cause of excess sebum production and acne formation.

Treatment Protocol
  • Patients underwent three treatment sessions using the AviClear device.
  • Each treatment was performed using a contact cooling sapphire tip, which allows for safe energy delivery and enhanced patient comfort.
  • No systemic medication or concurrent acne treatment was used during the study period to isolate the laser’s effects.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS
  • No serious adverse events were reported throughout the duration of the study.
  • The majority of participants rated their treatment experience as either “satisfying” or “extremely satisfying”.
  • The AviClear system was well-tolerated across all skin types, with no observed hyperpigmentation, scarring, or permanent damage.

A Review on Emerging Lasers and Light-Based Therapies in the Management of Acne

The landscape of acne treatment has evolved significantly with the introduction of lasers and light-based technologies. As reviewed in Emerging lasers and light-based therapies in the management of acne (PMC11438631), device-based interventions are increasingly used to overcome limitations of pharmacologic treatments such as oral antibiotics and isotretinoin.

These conventional therapies are associated with various side effects, from gastrointestinal upset and skin irritation to systemic risks like hepatotoxicity and teratogenicity.

Clinical Results and Indications
Laser Therapy in the Management of Acne

Among the technologies discussed, various wavelengths have shown efficacy. IPL and pulsed dye lasers target superficial vascular and pigmentary elements, while 1450 nm and 1320 nm lasers aim deeper into the dermis to thermally reduce sebaceous gland activity. Blue and red light therapies are also used to modulate inflammation and reduce C. acnes populations.

The review highlights that while multiple modalities are effective to varying degrees, most require ongoing maintenance or combination with other treatments. There has historically been a gap in achieving long-term sebum suppression without systemic medication—until the emergence of targeted mid-infrared technology.

Novel 1726 nm Laser – AviClear

AviClear, the one and only FDA-cleared 1,726 nm laser, fills this gap by selectively targeting and reducing sebaceous gland activity at its source. Unlike broader wavelength systems, AviClear’s unique absorption profile enables precise thermal injury to the sebaceous glands while sparing surrounding structures.

This wavelength specifically heats and disables overactive sebaceous glands, providing an effect similar to isotretinoin—but without systemic side effects or ongoing drug monitoring. It is non-ablative, requires no downtime, and has been shown to be safe for all skin types, including Fitzpatrick IV–VI.

How does AviClear differ from other acne lasers?

While other laser treatments offer benefits for acne, AviClear sets itself apart as the only FDA-approved option for all severities of acne vulgaris.

Some of the other laser treatments for acne include:

  • IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is effective in the treatment of acne; however, it delivers temporary results and may not be suitable for all skin tones.
  • Carbon Laser Peel is more marketing than science, as studies show minimal impact on oil glands, a key factor in acne formation.
  • Pico/Q-Switch Lasers excel at treating post-acne scarring but lacks FDA approval for acne itself.
  • Fotona Laser System is effective for mild to moderate acne but it is not FDA-approved for severe cases.

AviClear’s unique technology directly targets and shrinks sebaceous glands, the source of excess oil production that leads to breakouts. This FDA-approved approach delivers lasting results in just three-monthly sessions, making it a powerful option for achieving clear, beautiful skin.

Can I combine AviClear with other treatments?

Yes! AviClear can be combined with other treatments for enhanced results. At The Clifford Clinic, we pair AviClear with AGNES Acne and Gold PTT for severe nodular cystic acne.

Agnes
AGNES Acne

uses microneedling with RF energy to precisely target and shrink problematic pores, significantly reducing both inflamed and non-inflamed acne.

Gold PTT

combines microscopic gold particles with laser energy to eliminate acne-causing bacteria, reduce inflammation, and shrink oil glands.

What should I expect from the treatment?

AviClear features a unique cooling system called AviCool™ that keeps things comfortable throughout the session. You might feel a gentle snapping sensation during treatment, but clinical studies show patients tolerate it well without the need for pain relief.

AviClear treatments are quick and comfortable, typically lasting around 30 minutes. Most patients find the treatment tolerable without numbing cream.

However, for those who prefer extra comfort, we can always discuss using a topical anesthetic beforehand.
